The AKD Otway Trail Run 2024 was a rollercoaster of adrenaline, camaraderie, and scenic wonders. Held in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Colac, this event promised an epic adventure through the stunning Otways. Runners had the choice of two challenging courses—a 16km and a 7km route—both tracing the picturesque Old Beechy Rail Trail and finishing up in the charming town of Gellibrand.

What set this year apart was the organisers' commitment to raising the bar. With professional timing, participant medals, cash prizes, and an event village, it felt like we were stepping onto the big stage of running events. This event is organised by volunteers, so it truly is a testament to the wonderful community that Colac and surrounds have!
As event day arose before us, Mother Nature decided to play along, offering up the Goldilocks of weather—just right for a day on the trails. As I laced up my shoes and joined the pack, I couldn't help but feel a buzz of excitement in the air.
The 16km course, my chosen challenge, was a true test of grit and determination. Starting off with a gentle descent, it lulled us into a false sense of ease before hitting us with the mother of all hills around the 7km mark. That ascent seemed to go on forever, but reaching the top was like conquering a mountain. From there, it was a sweet descent, with the rolling rail trail providing the perfect backdrop for pushing our limits.
But the real magic of the AKD Otway Trail Run wasn't just in the terrain—it was in the people. From the cheers of encouragement at the start line to the high-fives and shared stories along the way, there was a sense of unity that transcended the miles.
I wasn't aiming for any personal bests, but as I conquered that hill, my mind and body signaled that I had more to give. Fortunately, I found myself trailing two runners who maintained a steady pace, allowing me to concentrate on keeping pace with them. One of the greatest aspects of trail runs is the camaraderie—everyone is incredibly supportive. Those fellow runners were just as determined to keep pace with me as I was with them! And you know what? I beat my 2023 time by 3 minutes.
After crossing the finish line surrounded by participants, volunteers and spectators, I was excited to jump in to the recovery of One Movement ice baths. Slipping into the chilly waters was a shock to the system, but the benefits were immediate. The cold immersion helped to reduce inflammation and muscle soreness, providing much-needed relief to tired legs. It was a refreshing way to rejuvenate both body and mind after the rigors of the run. As any seasoned runner knows, recovery is just as important as training, and these ice baths were a welcome addition to the post-race experience. They served as a reminder of the importance of taking care of ourselves, both on and off the trails, ensuring that we can continue to pursue our passion for running for years to come.
At the conclusion of the event I was greeted with a surprise—a beautiful bunch of flowers, a heartfelt thank you for lending a hand as a volunteer. It was the cherry on top of an already incredible day.
As I reflect on the adventure that was the AKD Otway Trail Run 2024, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude—for the breathtaking scenery, the camaraderie of fellow runners, and the opportunity to push my limits in the great outdoors.
Here's to the trails we conquered, the memories we made, and the promise of even greater adventures to come. AKD Otway Trail Run 2025, I'll be ready for you.
