Switching Gears: Why I Love Running a 5K Fun Run as a Long Distance Runner"

As a long distance runner, there's no doubt that you've spent countless hours pounding the pavement, pushing to go further than you ever thought possible. But have you ever considered taking a break from your usual routine and trying a 5km fun run?

I did recently. And it was so much fun.

When my lovely running friend said she was entering the 5km option at the Geelong Half Marathon Event, I thought "that would be fun!". I actually can't remember when I participated in my last 5km event. I tend to love the 10km options, but this event is structured so that there are only the two options: Half Marathon or 5km. Ingenious.

I used this as a nice way to break up my training for the Great Ocean Road Half Marathon, and challenge myself in a totally different way.

Here are a few reasons why you might enjoy it.

  • It's a different kind of challenge

Sure, you're used to running long distances, but a 5km race presents a different kind of challenge. It's shorter, so you need to push yourself harder and maintain a faster pace than you might in a longer race. It's also a great opportunity to work on your speed and test your limits in a new way.

  • It's a fun way to meet other runners

Running can be a solitary activity, but 5km fun runs are a great opportunity to meet other runners and connect with like-minded people. You'll be surrounded by people who share your passion for running, and you might even make some new friends along the way.

  • It's a chance to support a good cause

Many 5km fun runs are organised as charity events, with proceeds going to support a worthy cause. By participating, you'll be doing your part to support the organization and make a difference in the community. This one raised money for the Andrew Love Cancer Centre.

  • It's a chance to take the pressure off

If you're used to competing in longer races, a 5km fun run can be a chance to take the pressure off and just enjoy the experience. You can focus on having fun, enjoying the scenery, and running at your own pace without worrying about hitting a specific time goal.

  • It's a great way to mix up your training

If you're looking to mix up your training routine and add some variety, a 5km fun run can be a great way to do it. It can be a nice break from your usual long runs, and it can help you work on your speed and endurance in a new way.

As a long distance runner, taking part in a 5km fun run can be a refreshing and enjoyable experience. It's a different kind of challenge, a great way to meet other runners, an opportunity to support a good cause, a chance to take the pressure off, and a way to mix up your training routine.

So why not give it a try and see how much fun it can be?
